In our youth, a birthday is something to look forward to - cake, gifts, parties, cards – and we regale in the satisfaction that we are "growing up". As we ACTUALLY grow older, however, a birthday becomes less a cause for celebration than a time of reflection; how is it that we've lived as long as we have, and how much time do we have left?
The approach we take towards our birthdays in our later years can be cynical at best – we should, perhaps, revert to the attitude of our youth; a birthday is to be celebrated, and not lamented. Birthday milestones are both markers of both how far we’ve come and how far we have yet to go – so engaging in a little bit of decadent indulgence should continue to be the rule. Let’s have our cake – and eat it too!
